Ministry of Health Dispels Fears Over HMPV

The Ministry of Health has moved to reassure Kenyans about the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), following reports of an outbreak in China. Addressing public concerns, the Ministry emphasized that HMPV is neither new nor a cause for alarm in the country at this time

In an official statement, the Ministry underscored that HMPV has been documented as a contributing factor to respiratory illnesses in Kenya and globally. It noted that the current number of patients presenting with respiratory symptoms at health facilities across the nation remains within the expected range.

“Currently, there is no reported increase in the expected number of patients presenting with respiratory symptoms in our health facilities,” the statement read. The Ministry further highlighted that Kenya’s public health surveillance systems are on high alert to detect and manage any emerging threats.

HMPV, first identified in 2001, is a respiratory virus that can cause a range of symptoms, from mild cold-like conditions to severe illnesses such as bronchitis and pneumonia. The virus is particularly dangerous for children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

The virus spreads through respiratory droplets, direct contact with infected individuals, or contact with contaminated surfaces. Common symptoms include coughing, fever, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath. Severe cases may lead to hospitalization.

To prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses, including HMPV, the Ministry advised the public to maintain basic hygiene practices such as regular handwashing, wearing masks when symptomatic, and practicing respiratory etiquette, such as covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.

“We urge Kenyans to remain calm but vigilant. Observing basic public health practices is our collective responsibility in curbing the spread of respiratory illnesses,” the Ministry emphasized.

The Ministry also issued guidelines for those experiencing severe respiratory symptoms, including persistent high fever or difficulty breathing, urging them to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health facility. Citizens are encouraged to report unusual cases through the Ministry’s toll-free hotline, 719.

HMPV outbreaks typically occur seasonally, with peaks reported in late winter and spring in temperate regions. However, the Ministry assured Kenyans that there is no evidence of unusual activity or outbreaks of HMPV in the country at this time.
