Isaac Mutuma Sworn in as Meru Governor Amid Political Uncertainty

Isaac Mutuma M’Ethingia has officially taken over as the Governor of Meru County following the impeachment of Kawira Mwangaza. His swearing-in ceremony took place at Mwendantu Grounds, Meru Town, marking a new chapter for the county’s leadership.

Mutuma, who previously served as Deputy Governor, now finds himself at the helm of a county that has been politically volatile since Mwangaza’s election in 2022. His ascension comes after the High Court upheld the Senate’s decision to remove Mwangaza from office, dismissing her appeal on March 14, 2025. The ruling affirmed that her impeachment adhered to constitutional guidelines, rejecting claims of irregularities in the process.

Mwangaza’s tenure was turbulent, defined by constant clashes with the Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), who initiated multiple attempts to remove her. The final impeachment motion, passed by 26 senators on August 21, 2024, cited gross misconduct and constitutional violations. With only four senators opposing and 14 abstaining, her fate was sealed.

The transition of power has ignited mixed reactions. Supporters of Mutuma gathered in celebration, expressing optimism that his leadership will bring stability to the county. Former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi voiced his support, comparing Mutuma to Nehemiah, the biblical figure known for rebuilding Jerusalem. Murungi urged leaders to rally behind the new governor to restore unity and progress in Meru.

However, the transition has not been without controversy. A petition challenging the legality of Mutuma’s swearing-in has already been filed, arguing that the ceremony was conducted prematurely, contrary to constitutional provisions. The petitioner contends that the swearing-in should have taken place on the first Thursday after ten days from the court’s final ruling.
