In a decisive move to curb the alarming rise in school indiscipline and arson, the Teacher Service Commission (TSC) has issued a clear directive to all principals and head teachers. TSC Chairperson Nancy Macharia has emphasized the need for robust collaboration with security agencies to address these pressing issues.
Macharia’s directive calls for school leaders to actively engage with law enforcement in investigating incidents of arson and misconduct, ensuring that perpetrators face legal consequences. This mandate comes in response to growing concerns over safety and compliance within educational institutions.
“The time has come to step up our efforts,” Macharia stated. “It’s imperative that all Heads of Institutions enhance their supervision and work closely with Deputy Heads and Senior Masters to swiftly detect and address any cases of learner unrest.”
The TSC has underscored the importance of vigilance and continuous presence on school grounds by principals and head teachers. This directive aims to fortify the safety measures outlined in the Safety Standards Manual for Schools, which some institutions have reportedly neglected.
The TSC’s warning is unequivocal: non-compliance will not be tolerated. Macharia assured that stringent disciplinary actions will be taken against any school found in breach of the established guidelines. “The Commission is committed to enforcing the Code of Regulations for Teachers and the Code of Conduct and Ethics with unwavering firmness,” she affirmed.
In a parallel effort, the Ministry of Education has initiated a comprehensive inspection of both public and private schools. This multi-agency operation, which includes the Ministries of Education, Interior and National Administration, Health, and Public Works, alongside Kenya Red Cross and county officials, aims to evaluate adherence to safety standards and identify the root causes of recent fire incidents.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba highlighted the urgency of this inspection, which will be conducted in phases. “We need to thoroughly assess our schools’ compliance with the Safety Standards Manual to prevent future tragedies and ensure a secure learning environment for all students,” Ogamba stated.
As this nationwide inspection unfolds, the collaboration between educational leaders and security agencies will be crucial in safeguarding our schools and fostering a culture of discipline and safety.
