In a disturbing trend, three separate fires erupted at Uhuru Secondary in Nairobi, Ortum Boys in West Pokot, and Bukhalalire Secondary in Busia on Sunday and Monday, destroying dormitories and disrupting student life. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, but the incidents have sparked growing concerns about student safety.
At Uhuru Secondary School, two dormitories housing 105 Form Three students caught fire on Sunday morning as the students attended a church service. The Nairobi County fire department quickly responded to the scene and contained the blaze, but valuable property was lost.
In a similar incident, Ortum Boys and Bukhalalire Secondary Schools reported fires in their dormitories on Monday, also causing significant property damage.
Authorities suspect arson in these cases, pointing to a worrying rise in school fires across the country. Recent fire incidents have been reported at Isiolo Girls, Kagonye Secondary, Njia Boys, and Hillside Endarasha Academy, where a tragic blaze killed 21 pupils last week.
Investigations into the cause of the fires are underway, with police exploring the possibility of deliberate sabotage. Meanwhile, schools and parents are calling for stricter safety measures and more vigilant monitoring to prevent further tragedies.
