Manchester United has secured the talents of Bayern Munich duo Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui in a strategic move to fortify their defense.. The combined deal could reach a value close to £60 million.
De Ligt, a 25-year-old center-back, has committed to a five-year contract with the option of a one-year extension. His acquisition is poised to add significant depth and experience to United’s backline. The club will pay an initial fee of £38.5 million, with an additional £4.3 million in potential bonuses. A former captain under Erik ten Hag during Ajax’s impressive run to the 2019 Champions League semi-finals, de Ligt expressed enthusiasm about reuniting with his former coach. “Erik ten Hag shaped the early stages of my career, so he knows how to get the best out of me. I’m excited to be part of this special club and determined to uphold my track record of success at the highest level,” de Ligt stated.
Noussair Mazraoui, 26, is another significant addition to the United squad. He arrives on a four-year deal, also with a one-year extension option, for an initial fee of £12.8 million, with potential add-ons of £4.3 million. With the injury of left-back Luke Shaw, Mazraoui may see immediate action in United’s upcoming Premier League fixture against Fulham. Having previously worked under ten Hag at Ajax, Mazraoui remarked, “It’s thrilling to reunite with Erik as I enter the prime of my career. I understand his expectations and am committed to giving my all to help the team succeed.”
The signing of Mazraoui was facilitated by the departure of defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who transferred to West Ham for £15 million. United’s pursuit of defensive reinforcements also saw them make multiple bids for Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite, which were ultimately turned down as Everton held firm on their £70 million valuation. De Ligt’s arrival is seen as a more cost-effective solution, bringing with him a wealth of experience and leadership.
These strategic moves by Manchester United reflect their intent to strengthen the squad under ten Hag’s guidance, positioning themselves as strong contenders in the Premier League this season.
