Cleophas Malala Ousted as Secretary General Amidst Party Disputes

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) has revoked the appointment of Cleophas Malala as its Secretary General. The decision, announced following a Friday morning meeting, has Vice Chairperson Hassan Omar stepping in as the interim Secretary General.

In their statement, the Committee explained, “The National Executive Committee was convened today at the request of its members to discuss, deliberate, and agree on the way forward in light of recent events within the party and broader national developments.”

This decision comes on the heels of increasing discord within the UDA, the ruling party in Kenya. Over the past few weeks, tensions have been mounting, marked by disagreements over party policies and leadership strategies. The NEC’s move to replace Malala appears to be a step towards addressing these internal conflicts and stabilizing the party’s direction.

Earlier in the week, UDA Chairperson Cecily Mbarire had called for a National Executive Council meeting to be held at the Hustler Plaza. However, Malala sought court intervention to halt the meeting, arguing it should instead occur the following Friday. This legal tussle added to the growing perception of disunity within the party ranks.

The NEC has also directed the National Elections Board to proceed with the first phase of grassroots elections across the remaining counties. This is part of a broader strategy to reinforce the party’s administrative framework and ensure more inclusive and participatory governance.

The statement further elaborated, “The Party will be implementing a series of governing and administrative measures designed to accelerate its agenda and establish a distinctive path of inclusive, participative, and consultative organization.”
