Meru MCAs Impeach Governor Kawira Mwangaza for the Third Time

The Meru County Assembly has once again voted to impeach Governor Kawira Mwangaza, marking the third time in her tumultuous tenure that the county’s leadership has sought her removal from office.

The latest impeachment motion, passed with a significant majority of 49 MCAs, accuses Governor Mwangaza of gross misconduct, misappropriation of public funds, and abuse of office.

This move follows previous unsuccessful attempts to oust the governor, the most recent being in December 2023, when the Senate overturned her impeachment.

However, persistent allegations of corruption and administrative failures have continued to plague her administration, leading to renewed efforts by the MCAs to remove her from power.

The impeachment motion has deepened political divisions in Meru, with some leaders and residents viewing it as a necessary step towards accountability, while others decry it as a politically motivated witch hunt.

The Njuri Ncheke Council of Elders, a traditional authority in the region, is reportedly divided over the matter, further complicating the situation.

Governor Mwangaza, who has consistently denied all charges against her, now faces the possibility of another Senate trial, where her political fate will ultimately be decided. The outcome of this process could have far-reaching implications for the governance and stability of Meru County.

As the situation unfolds, all eyes will be on the Senate to see whether it will uphold the decision of the Meru MCAs or once again come to the governor’s rescue. This development is expected to have significant repercussions not only for Governor Mwangaza but also for the political landscape of Meru County.
