Bangladesh Prime Minister Resigns Amid Unrest, Military Takes Over

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and fled the country after weeks of deadly protests, with the military announcing the formation of an interim government.

The unrest peaked on Sunday with nearly 100 deaths. Army Chief Waker-Uz-Zaman confirmed Hasina’s resignation and the military’s takeover in a national broadcast, urging an end to the violence that has claimed many lives and damaged the economy.

Hasina, 76, escaped by helicopter after protesters stormed her palace in Dhaka. Jubilant crowds celebrated by waving flags and dancing on tanks.

The violence on Sunday was the deadliest day of the protests, which began in early July against civil service job quotas and escalated to calls for Hasina’s resignation. At least 94 people died, including 14 police officers.

Hasina’s government faced accusations of misusing state power to suppress dissent, including extrajudicial killings of opposition activists. The protests included people from all walks of life, united in their demand for change.
