Tricks of the devil among us

DESPERATE: Some people go to places of worship because they want miracles.

TRUE OR FALSE? While some people believe that Satan does not exist, there are other opinions and highlights, writes Beatrice Nakibuuka.

Just like the Satan was able to deceive Adam and Eve, he is also able to deceive us today. When he told them that they would not die, it was a lie because even when the two did not die instantly, an animal was killed to cloth their nakedness. They later had to die; this was not the original plan of God. Man was meant to be immortal if he had not sinned but after this, man had to face death.

Pr Godfrey Lubwama, the head pastor at SDA Kampala Central Church, says this is one of the greatest deceptions in the world by the devil. More exist but largely because of false doctrines and misinterpretation of the scriptures. These deceptions and many more are bound to make people leave the ways of God.

Deception that the soul is immortal

Pr Lubwama remarks that many people think that when a person dies, his soul goes somewhere and can watch over those who are living. Some of them refer to 1Samuel 28, when King Saul consulted a sorcerer who called the spirit of Samuel who had already died.
It is important to note, however, at that time, Saul was already out of the will of God because he had sinned. He had inquired of God but he had not given him an answer. Also, while at the sorcerer’s place, Saul did not actually see the image of Samuel.

He asked the woman in verse 13 and 14: “What did you see? What is his form?”

This is evidence that Saul did not see Samuel’s spirit but rather a disguise by the sorceress.

In 1Chronicles 10:13-14, God punished Saul for this iniquity, “So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the Lord, even against the word of the Lord, which he kept not, and also for seeking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to inquire of it; and inquired not of the Lord: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of Jesse.”

“The sin of witchcraft, or the dealing with familiar spirits, consists, therefore, in holding intercourse with Satan under the name of conversing with the dead. Under such circumstances men put themselves under the power of Satan,” he says.

“Death causes such pain that leaves people frustrated,” says Pr Lubwama. Many people lament perpetually about the death of their dear ones and when their fads are exactly reproduced or little tokens of friendship, which were known only to the inquired and to the departed, are brought out, it awakens fond memories so that the inquirer becomes satisfied that he is conversing with his dearest friend.
This is being captivated by Satan because it is the fallen angels who imitate or counterfeit them.”

Ecclesiastes 9:5,6,10; Psalms 115:17; 146:4 point out that when someone dies, they do not know what happens in the world everything is gone out of their minds because death is like sleep.

The deception about evolution

The theory that the earth and everything that exists happened by accident of a big bang and that man evolved from animals gives way for one to forget that God exists.

The same theory teaches the world has existed for million years which makes void the Sabbath. “Heaven and earth were created in seven literal days and the Sabbath still holds. The world has only existed for 6,000 years,” says Pr Lubwama.

Does the devil exist?

Many people do not believe that Satan exists. They often ask, “If God loves us so much, why does he let the devil dwell among us to cause us to sin? He should have killed him so that God’s people are not tempted or do not suffer.”

This is a plan by the devil that after making us feel comfortable that he does not exist creates a rift between God and us. He then fills the void left in us so we do things according to our way and not God’s will.

“Satan has many strategies, schemes, and devices to deceive us. Some people unknowingly worship him as an “angel of light” while others look to him through channeling and astrology, seeking answers from soothsayers and mystics. These dark practices are deceptive because the devil has many other more subtle schemes,” he says.

The book of Revelations warns us about one of the most pervasive deceptions. The apostle John saw in vision the famous four horsemen of the Apocalypse.
“And I looked, and behold, a white horse. He who sat on it had a bow; and a crown was given to him, and he went out conquering and to conquer.” (Revelation 6:2)

“I commend people to read their Bibles not seasonally but all the time so that they are able to find the truths contained therein. This will protect them from the deceptions of false doctrine,” Pr Godfrey Lubwama, the head pastor SDA Kampala Central Church.
