This move positions Nyong’o at the helm of the Central Management Committee, a pivotal body in the party’s decision-making hierarchy, while ODM Party Leader Raila Odinga shifts focus to his campaign for the African Union (AU) Chairmanship.

Odinga’s temporary retreat from ODM leadership comes as he gears up for the AU Chairmanship elections scheduled for February 2025. Nyong’o’s new role will see him chair the Central Management Committee until Odinga’s anticipated return in February 2025.

ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna emphasized the necessity of this interim arrangement. “With Raila Odinga deeply engaged in his AU campaign, it’s crucial that the Central Management Committee continues to operate smoothly. Nyong’o’s appointment ensures there is no disruption in the party’s leadership during this critical period,” Sifuna said.

Sifuna was quick to dispel rumors suggesting that Nyong’o’s appointment could lead to a permanent leadership shift within ODM. “This appointment is purely a precautionary measure. Raila Odinga remains the party leader, and once he is available, he will resume his role as chair of the committee,” Sifuna clarified.

Nyong’o, who has previously held a similar position when Odinga was abroad on a high-profile visit to the United States a decade ago, steps into this role with significant experience.

In the wake of Odinga’s step back, internal dynamics within ODM have become increasingly intense. Several high-profile party members are vying for elevated positions as the party navigates through this transition period.

Recently, Odinga expanded the ODM leadership team by appointing Governors Simba Arati (Kisii) and Abdulswamad Nassir (Mombasa), along with Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi as deputy party leaders. Additionally, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has taken on the role of National Chairperson, succeeding John Mbadi, and filling the positions left vacant by Hassan Joho and Wycliffe Oparanya, who have joined President William Ruto’s Cabinet.

The reshuffle also includes Nominated Senator Hamida Kibwana’s appointment to the National Election Coordinating Committee, replacing Beatrice Askul, who now serves as Cabinet Secretary for East Africa Community and Regional Development.

The National Election Coordinating Committee will oversee grassroots elections scheduled for November, following a delay from April due to funding issues. The National Treasury allocated Sh1.48 billion to political parties last fiscal year, with ODM receiving Sh308 million, compared to the ruling UDA party’s Sh577 million. ODM is advocating for the prompt release of these funds to facilitate the upcoming elections and ensure smooth party operations.

Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has been appointed as the interim leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party.
