DEVELOPING:Earthquake causes cracks on a bridge in Naivasha, motorists cautioned

Kenyans from different parts of the country on Sunday evening witnessed an earthquake between 1920hrs to 1933hrs across the country in Nairobi, Kiambu, Machakos, Mombasa, Nyeri,Makueni and parts of Naivasha with seismologists pinpointing Taita Taveta as the epicenter of the magnitude 4.8 quake.

The MET department has also confirmed that there is no risk of a Tsunami at the coast, watering down an earlier alert that had advised residents of the coastal region to move to higher ground.

Mkarimu Media has learnt that the aftermath of the quake was visible in Nakuru county. Police  have cautioned motorists against using the road that passes through Fai Mario (sp) in Naivasha following the tremor.

Traffic commandant Samuel Kimaru warned that a bridge that that links a section of the road in the region has developed cracks.

Traffic police officers have been deployed to the site to divert traffic awaiting instruction from road experts.

Road users in the region have been advised to heed to instructions until clearance to use the bridge has been issued.

Last year, a 2 kilometer fault line sparked fear in Moi Ndabi area on the outskirts of Naivasha town with at least 16 families having to move to higher ground after sections of their homes sank.

The fault line had been preceded by a similar incidence in Mai Mahiu where a section of road had sank in what geologists said was a slow separation of the Somali plate from the rest of Africa.
