Doctors Clash with New Health CS Duale Over Sector Politics

The appointment of Aden Duale as new Health Cabinet Secretary in Ruto’s government has sparked concern among medical professionals, with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) warning that his political background could disrupt the sector.

KMPDU Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah expressed skepticism about Duale’s ability to navigate the complex healthcare landscape, citing his lack of technical expertise. Speaking at the union’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Kirinyaga County, Atellah recalled past challenges with former CS Susan Nakhumicha, whose tenure was marred by misunderstandings of medical professionals’ roles and the broader healthcare system. In contrast, he lauded Deborah Barasa, who served as Health CS before Duale, for fostering constructive dialogue with the union and preventing unnecessary strikes.

“We do not need a politician in the Health Ministry. We need a leader who understands the intricacies of our profession. Duale must take time to learn and avoid politicizing health matters,” Atellah asserted.

A key issue raised by KMPDU is the Social Health Authority (SHA), which the union argues primarily benefits politicians rather than healthcare workers or patients. Doctors have also issued warnings to counties like Kiambu, where medical professionals are reportedly overworked, underpaid, and facing salary delays.

Duale, however, has defended his appointment, stating that he has the full backing of President William Ruto to implement reforms and ensure universal healthcare for all Kenyans. He has vowed to tackle corruption and inefficiencies in the ministry, positioning himself as a reformist ready to challenge cartels within the sector.
