The Senate has proposed forming an 11-member committee to investigate the potential removal of Meru County Governor Kawira Mwangaza, following her third impeachment. The committee will include Senators Hillary Sigei (Bomet), Abdul Haji (Garissa), Wahome Wamatinga (Nyeri), David Wafula (Bungoma), Gloria Orwoba (Nominated), Karen Nyamu (Nominated), Boy Issa Juma (Kwale), Eddy Oketch (Migori), Shakilla Abdalla (Nominated), Betty Montet (Nominated), and Beatrice Akinyi (Nominated).
Senators will vote to decide whether the impeachment should be examined by the plenary or a special committee. If approved, the committee will report back within ten days on whether the allegations against the Governor are substantiated.
Governor Mwangaza faces several accusations, including gross violations of the Constitution of Kenya, national and county laws, and abuse of office. Specific allegations include:
- Illegally revoking the appointment of Virginia Miriti without the required County Assembly vote.
- Misleading the public about fundraising efforts following the murder of Daniel Muthiani.
- Improper payment of emergency call allowances, leading to excessive payments.
- Failure to appoint chairpersons for various county boards.
- Ignoring County Assembly recommendations regarding dismissals of key officials.
- Illegally dismissing several board CEOs.
- Using a manual payroll system against regulations.
- Employing an excessively large workforce, leading to a substantial increase in the wage bill.
These charges have sparked considerable debate and scrutiny over the governance and accountability in Meru County.
