Siaya County Senator James Orengo is confident that President Uhuru Kenyatta will endorse ODM party leader Raila Odinga for the 2022 presidential race.
Speaking on Sunday in Siaya County Orengo said President Kenyatta had already given an indication that the man he will pick to succeed him will be a “surprise”, adding that the surprise candidate will be Odinga.
“At the end of the day, we’re saying that the leadership of Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Amolo Odinga is going to produce the next President of the Republic of Kenya,” said the Senate Minority Leader.
“I’m glad when President Uhuru Kenyatta was saying he’s going to surprise people in Jubilee as to who is going to be the next President of the Republic of Kenya, he was saying that knowing that (William) Ruto is the Deputy President… and that surprise, according to us, practically and for all reasons, is Raila Amolo Odinga.”
Orengo also assured Kenyans that there will be a referendum to address the loop holes in the current Constitution.
“We are going to have a referendum which I think will address the 20% of the Constitution that we had agreed in 2010 that there were areas that needed attention,” he said.
The ODM point man further impressed upon Kenyans to support the Building Bridges Initiative, noting that it is going to come out with constitutional solutions on the way forward for the country.
His remarks came as excited continued to mount in the Nyanza region ahead of an anticipated visit by the President for the first time since he was sworn in.
A number of Nyanza-based leaders have already called on calm among supporters as Uhuru gears up to visit the region on December 13.
The country’s political landscape has changed drastically since the handshake.
One year into Uhuru’s term and political alliances have already began to take shape, with the next presidential race tipped to be a two-horse duel between Raila Odinga and current Deputy
President William Ruto.
This is despite the fact that Raila has on several occasions reiterated he has hung up his political boots but majority of supporters and ODM-allied leaders feel like 2022 might be his best shot at the top job.
Uhuru’s main agenda in his tours to Nyanza will be to oversee the launch of several projects, and Orengo us confident the president will issue an assurance of supporting Raila in 2022.
