Mr Kiprop said that in 2014, he finished in the second place so he resolved to win this year. He has participated three times in the marathon – in 2010 and 2011, with a fifth place finish in 2011.

Ms Chepkoech said this was her first marathon and that she had been participating in road races and 10km races.

“I am very happy. I thank God for helping me win the race. The weather was good,” she said.

Valerie Aiyabei won the women’s 21 kilometre race while Mathew Kiprotich won the men’s competition.

Ms Aiyabei was followed by Irine Kimais and Sylvia Kibet while Mr Kiprotich was followed by Paul Kibet and James Kipsang.

Over 18,000 people took part in the 16th edition of the marathon, a key initiative in the ‘Seeing is believing’ project against visual impairments and blindness.

Route director George Kariuki said 80 elite athletes signed up for the men and women’s 42km full marathon and 21km half marathon races.

The full marathon started at 7am, the half marathon at 7.20am and the 21km wheelchair race at 6.50am. There was also a 10km fun run.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, Woman Representative Esther Passaris, Gatanga legislator Joseph Nduati and 72-year-old marathoner Nahashon Kamau were among those who participated in the event.
