50 aliens with no work permit arrested in Kajiado

More than 50 foreigners without valid work permits have been arrested in Kajiado County.

This is part of the ongoing nationwide crackdown on illegal immigrants.

The foreigners arrested are said to be working and living in Kajiado County illegally owing to the county’s proximity to Nairobi and the Namanga border points.

The Kajiado Central Deputy County Commissioner, Charles Wambugu said the raids will continue in all companies that are run by foreigners to verify the work permits, in learning institutions and in residential areas.

Wambugu noted that foreigners coming to work in Kenya should apply for work permits in their home countries.

Only those whose applications for foreign workers permits have been processed will be allowed to come into the country for work.

“It is now clear, if you have a job, or you have applied for a job to come to Kenya and work in a regional branch of an international company, you apply for a work permit from your country of origin,” said Wambugu.

The Commissioner further appealed to locals to report any foreigners they suspect to be staying in their neighborhoods illegally.

The Interior Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Fred Matiang’i last month issued a directive ordering foreigners working in the country without official work permits to get documentation or be arrested.

He gave them a 60-day notice, adding that the move will help the government get rid of tax evaders and criminals.

The CS noted that illegal migrants with fake working permits come to the country as tourists but take advantage of immigration loopholes to engage in business activities which are against the law.

The raids intensified after the Immigration Department on August 27 set up a hotline where ordinary Kenyans could report aliens.
